About the coalition
The Greater Cleveland Voter Coalition is an independent, nonpartisan effort to register as many new voters as possible, and maximize voter turnout in every election. Since we were formed in March, 2003, we have registered over 7,000 new voters in Cuyahoga County.
Our coalition is made up of both individual members and over 50 affiliated organizations. We are not affiliated with any political party; we are endorsed by elected officials from both major political parties. Fiscally, we are a division of a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
We try to reach the people who have been the least likely to register and/or vote in past elections: voters under 30 and over 60, minorities, women, especially single moms, the disabled, and formerly-incarcerated individuals. To reach these potential voters, we work with groups who are best suited to reach these voters:
- Community organizations,
- Labor unions,
- Faith-based groups,
- Minority coalitions,
- Advocates for formerly-incarcerated individuals.
Since over half the registered voters do not go to the polls, we provide newly-registered voters with ongoing information and education about elections. Any new voter who requests updates can receive information about the dates and locations of elections, as well as the candidates and issues on the ballot. New voters can elect to receive updates by mail, phone or e-mail.
Our coalition is staffed by volunteers—very busy people who have seen the importance of what we are trying to do and have given generously of their precious time to make the Coalition work. Our goal is to increase voter participation in Northeast Ohio in the 2004 elections and beyond.
