If you are registered to vote
Should I vote in the May 2, 2006 primary?
Political parties run candidates for some offices in primary
elections. The winner of the primary goes on to be the party’s candidate in the
general election on November 7. If you
want a voice in who the candidates are in November, you should vote in the
primary. The deadline for filing to be a candidate in the May, 2006 primary was Feb. 16.
What do I have to take with me when I go to vote? Do I need I.D.?
For the May primary you don’t need ID, as of now. You will just sign
your name in the polling book. But for the November general election, you will
need ID, because of a new law that was just passed by the Ohio legislature and signed by the Governor on
Jan. 31, 2006.The ID part of the new law will be put into effect in November.
Some people say that we need ID requirements to stop voter fraud. Is this true?
There were only 4 cases of proven voter fraud in Ohio between 2002 and 2004, out of 9 million votes cast!!
I’ve heard that you need to belong to a political party to vote in the May primary. Is this true?
Yes, if you want to vote on candidates.
I moved since the last election (or changed my name.) Do I have to re-register to
vote, or am I still registered?
You have to re-register.
I want to vote by absentee ballot. How can I do that?
Call your Board of Elections and
ask them to send you an application for an absentee ballot. Fill it out and
mail it in. The instructions will tell
you what ID to include. You no longer have to give a reason why you want to
vote absentee.
